Master Gardener General Meeting
December 3, 2009

            The meeting was called to order by the president Linda Lucas at 9:00 with 55 members in attendance. 

The minutes from the November 5 meeting were approved by those in attendance.

            The treasurer Linda Wever reported the general account balance, November receipts and expenditures, the Training Account balance, along with balances for Tree and Water Stewards.

            The treasurer reported donations from the reserve funds proposed by the board for 2009:

                        Unitarian Universalist Church                           150

The membership approved the proposed donations.

            The treasurer presented the proposed budget for 2010.  A question was asked about the amount proposed for contingency.  It was explained that the contingency fund was set aside for unknown expenses such as the plant sale and possible copying expenses.

The proposed budget was approved as presented. 

Projects    Jeanne Millin

Sherry Curtis, chairperson for The Diagnostic Clinic, presented the project to the membership.  The Diagnostic Clinic was originally listed under Special Projects, but it is being proposed as a stand alone project because there is a recognition that there is an on going need for its services.  Homeowners Associations and community members have an continuing need for the information it offers to help them solve problems they experience with plantings. A budget of $200 is proposed and will be used for resource materials and diagnostic support from VA Tech.  Historically 8 to 10 volunteers have been involved in this project.    The project was approved by the membership

            Evaluation of Projects     Jeanne reported that all projects have been undergoing evaluation to assure that they continue to meet the mission of Master Gardeners of training and education   Habitat for Humanity has been temporarily suspended due to inactivity and will be reinstated when there is a need. 

There was also a discussion about the CW Greenhouse tours/Outreach project.  It was clarified that the Outreach referred to are educational garden tours for ticketed CW guests conducted at various historic gardens, including Reid & Shields.  Since these tours have no connection to the CW Greenhouse, hours reported for them will now be entered under the Reid/Shields Gardens.  Master Gardeners would follow the CW application procedure through Laura Viancour if interested in conducting these tours.

Announcements

The Graduation Dinner will be held January 14 at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 6:00.  The cost is $15.  The cut off date for reservations is the January meeting

Mary Liz Sadler reported that the 2010 class is ready to begin on Jan. 4 with 37 people signed up as interns.

VMGA  rosters are still available for member

Dennis Wool reported on the Plant Sale, which will take place April 24 at the Community Building again.  He reminded everyone to get plants out of their gardens now and put them in 6 inch pots so they can become established.  Eileen Bartlett is still offering pots to anyone who needs them.  There will be monthly updates by the committee with ideas on how everyone can become involved.  Friday April 23 will be used for set up at the sale site.

Barbara Gustafson announced that Incredible Edibles will meet at CDR the second full week of December.

Doris Heath of Extension reported that they have survived the construction and that they have 8 more days in temporary quarters.  She commented that the Extension System Budget for 2010 is extremely stressed since there will be no stimulus funds applied to that budget.  Unit coordinators are aware that they may need to take on the duties of whole areas.  There are openings for agricultural agents that may not be filled.  The County Board of Supervisors may need to make deep cuts to many services.  So far whole agencies have not been cut. 

She continued that a new Dean has been appointed.  Strategic Planning has been implemented to develop a Five Year Action Plan for VCE.   Citizens and coordinators are being involved to look at the strengths, weaknesses, and trends of programs.  One such meeting will take place on December 8 in Newport News and. On January 7, a VA Budget Hearing will take place at Tidewater Community College at 12:00.  Master Gardeners are urged to participate in these meetings to support VCE.  The Extension budget for the next 6-month period is uncertain.  VA Tech is no longer doing printing.  The JCC Extension is losing its copy machine, and the budget for printing is extremely limited.   In addition, funds for the Turf Love program were drastically reduced.  Master Gardeners can help by contacting JCC supervisors and attending Board of Supervisors’ meetings. 

The meeting adjourned at 10:00 for holiday refreshments before the program.

Beth Fugate introduced the speaker:  Kathy Duncan from Custom Gardens who spoke on “Basic Landscape Design and Phases of Installation”.                

Master Gardener General Meeting
November 5, 2009

The meeting began with the program introduced by Carol Fryer:

 Holiday Decorating by Libby Oliver, Coordinator of the Williamsburg Farmer’s Market

Linda Lucas called the business meeting to order at 10:20.  There were 55 members in attendance.

The minutes from the October meeting were approved.

The treasurer reported the general account balance, October receipts and expenditures, the Training Account balance along with the balances for Tree and Water Stewards.

The Virginia Master Gardener Association representative, Nelda Pressly, announced that phone books were available for members.

John Giffin and Judy Hansen announced that logo apparel was available, for order including shirts and jackets. They had item descriptions and prices available as well. John asked if the membership would like to order T shirts now or in the spring - the consensus was that a spring order would be preferred.   He reminded everyone that an order of at least 50 would be required.

Projects Chairperson, Jeanne Millin thanked individual project chairs for getting their reports completed.  She said that the reports will be evaluated and that one project may be suspended until it becomes active again.

Jeanne reminded the membership that every project needs a co-chair along with volunteers.  She announced that Denny Mehigan is looking for a co-chair for the Mobil Master Gardener project and also needs displays for new projects.  She also mentioned that Melissa’s Meadow needs a chair and a co-chair.

Minouche Robinson, chairperson for the Speakers Bureau, would like to hear from those Master Gardeners who have a program or talk suitable for the community.  She would like to develop an up to date of list of MG programs available to the community.  Also she needs speakers for the MG program at the regional jail in basic gardening topics.

Harriet Robinson reported on the Water Wise Garden at the Human Services building.  She was commended for her leadership in that garden this summer.  She reported that a section of the garden that has been planted with a Dogwood tree and herbs needed a bench to complete the area.  Happily, Doris Heath found a person who volunteered to supply the needed bench.  An announcement along with a photo will appear in the next newsletter.

Art Gustafson will send volunteer hours updates in mid November to the membership. 

Aileen Bartlett is giving away pots of all sizes; just let her know of your needs.

Sundrops from  the Reid/Shields garden were given out prior to the meeting.

QUESTIONS/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Helen Hamilton announced that the new pavilion in the Botanical Garden will be dedicated on Saturday November 7 at 11:00 and a tour of the garden will be given.

A Children’s Garden is being planned for the project.

Helen also announced that the Virginia Native Plant Society needs a treasurer, which is a board position for the society.    They have six meetings year

Bob Winters announced that Turf Love 09 has been on cable TV during October.  The Virginia Tech Turf Grass Team has a 40 minute DVD available for continuing ed credits.

Doris Heath, Cooperative Extension Representative was unable to be present, but asked that a Public Forum to identify the role of VCE be announced.  It will take place December 8 at 10:00 to 11:30 at Brittingham-Midtown Community Center, 570 McLawhorne Dr. in Newport News.   Linda Lucas asked for people to attend to stress the need for an Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent.  Pre-registration is required.  Call 757-890-4940 so that the public can be made aware that Agricultural Agents are needed in both JCC and New Kent County..

Carol Fryer, Vice President of Internal Education announced that plans are proceeding for a May or June trip to the National Arboretum.  Upcoming monthly meeting programs were announced:   December                         Landscape Design by K. Duncan

Master Gardener General Meeting
October 1, 2009

The meeting was called to order by the president, Linda Lucas at 9:05. 

59 members were present.  The minutes from the September 3 meeting were approved by those in attendance. 

The treasurer, Linda Wever, reported the general account balance, September receipts and expenses, Training Account balance, Tree and Water Steward balances and the amount of dues collected as of August 6.  She asked project chairs to have their budget requests to her by October 15.  

Linda announced that the Cooperative Extension Representative, Doris Heath would attend if she could to answer questions, but that she had no comments prepared for this meeting.

Jeanne Millen , Projects Chair, announced that the Projects Chairs met on September 17 and discussed two topics:  (1)  Budget requests are due by October 15, and (2) Virginia Tech has requested that all MG projects go through a  review and renew process to assure that all projects are properly focused on community education.  She also reminded the membership that there is opportunity to make individual, tax deductible, gifts to the MG library so that missing books and new titles may be purchased.  Last, Jeanne announced that two new projects would be presented for possible approval by the membership:

County Fair Committee – MG have been involved in the County Fair informally over the last few years.  Doris Heath requested that a committee be set up so that MG educational projects might be presented to fair attendees in a more organized way each year. Jeanne Muller and Greg Allen will chair this project.  They will be looking for projects to be presented at the fair each year.  The project was approved

Backyard Barrels and Bins – Dennis Wool presented a short power point presentation highlighting this project that promotes sound horticultural practices for those who would like to garden but have limited space or restrictions.  In addition to Dennis, Jack Gross, Nancy Carnegie, and Roger Evans have had great success promoting the use of recycled materials to construct self watering containers for growing and barrels for collecting rain water and composting.  The project was approved.

There were no announcements from Jim and Nelda Pressly for Virginia Master Gardeners Association.

Risk Management Training – Linda Lucas reported for Carol Fryer that

everyone who attended the trainings, which occurred at the  June meeting  or on September 23, should be listed on a chart which also indicated if the VCE form had been filled out following the training. Emergency cards were available as well.   Everyone was encouraged to look at the checklist and fill out a form if not yet done.  Further Risk Management training will be available on line for those who still need it. 

Other Announcements:

1. The Virginia Gourd Festival was announced.  It will take place in Middleton, Virginia on November 7 and 8.

2. John Giffin announced the Landscape Care Seminar on Wednesday October 28 at Thomas Nelson Community College. It will be presented by the Bartlett Tree Experts which many MG enjoyed last year. 

3. The MG Plant Sale will be held on April 24.  Susan Giandomenico will lead it again this year and announced that those who will be dividing perennials this fall can obtain pots from Susan or Aileen Bartlett.  The sale will again be held with the Virginia Native Plant Society and that Atlantic Growers will supply plants as needed.  In addition, she announced that a staging area is still needed and asked those with ideas about how to solve this concern to see her.   

4.  Barbara Gustafson announced the Understanding Watersheds program to be held Saturday October 10 from 10:00 to 4:00 at the JCW Recreation Department, Rooms A and B.

September 3, 2009

Linda Lucas called the meeting to order at 9:05 AM.  63 Master Gardeners were in attendance.

August General Meeting Minutes   A motion and a second was made to approve the August minutes.  The minutes were approved.

Treasurer Report  Linda Wever reported the balances for our general account, Training account and the separate funds for Tree Stewards and Water Stewards.  She also reported the total amount of dues collected as of Sept. 3, 2009.  She also reported that 14 rain barrels, 15 birdhouses, and   self watering containers have been sold.

Internal Education – Carol Fryer

Risk Management Training will be given online at the VCE Office in Toano on September 23 by Dave Close, Master Gardener Coordinator of Virginia Tech.  Register with Sandra if you plan to attend.  Master Gardeners need to complete a VCE Volunteer form by Oct. 1 each year to be covered by the Master Gardener Liability Insurance.  Risk Management training needs to be completed every three years.  If you have taken the training but have not signed the form, it is available on line.

Brent and Becky’s Bulbs Field Trip.  John Giffin reminded the group that the tour of the farm gardens and a seminar on “Bulbs as Companion Plants.” will take place September 14.  Members can still sign up through Sept 5.  Cost is $15.00; checks should be payable to JCC/W MG and given to John.  Autographed books by Brent and Becky will be available.  An optional $12.00 lunch will be held at Olivia’s Restaurant near Gloucester Court House after the field trip.   Those wishing to car pool should meet near Target at Marquis Mall in time to leave at 7:30.

Projects Report    Jeanne Millin was not present.  Linda Lucas introduced Peg Crews who will take over the Help Desk from Helen Hamilton who has retired from that position.

Landscape Love   Anne Nielsen reported that they have twenty one registrations for assistance, about half the number her group could accommodate.  The registration closes September 15 and she urged the group to encourage neighbors to take advantage of  the services. 

Super Turf Saturday   Bob Winters expressed thanks to those who helped with this event on August 15.  He also announced that he had just returned from Turf and Landscape Days in Richmond. He urged members to seek Department of Conservation and Recreation certification for nutrient management in the Turf and Landscape Program.  The training takes place in Richmond on September 23 and 24 for soils and management and October 8 and 9 for  plan writing.

Therapeutic Gardening Showcase by Linda Lucas and Barbara Gustafson

Barbara and Linda presented a Power Point presentation which illustrated the project sites, participants, and main goals of therapeutic gardening.  Therapeutic gardening is specifically designed for those with special needs.  Clients are helped to gain self -control, increase self worth, improve mobility, sharpen the senses, maintain social interaction and cooperation, and be stimulated by nature’s gifts.  All of the programs use container gardening, the buddy system, photos, plant pictures and involve clients, not by doing, but by assisting with activities.  The Master Gardeners involved share their experiences with growing vegetables, flowers, herbs, and houseplants.  Herbs have a special place in all the programs because they touch all the senses.  Programs take place at:  Spring House at Patriot’s Colony, Woodhaven at the Landing, Spring Arbor, Methodist Respite Care Center, and Envoy.  A meeting will take place for anyone interested in the program on October 21 at the clubhouse at the Vineyard.  Also a conference is planned for the spring.

Other Announcements   Genrose Lashinger reminded members that T shirts are available for Mattey’s Garden but must be purchased from her today.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:45.  After a break, Lawrence Griffith, plant curator for Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, discussed  his book, Flowers and Herbs of Early America. Barbara Temple Lombardi, photographer for the book, joined Mr. Griffith for the presentation.  After the talk and question and answer period, the authors signed copies of their book.   

Master Gardener General Meeting
August 6, 2009

Linda Lucas called the meeting to order at 9:05 AM.  85 Master Gardeners were in attendance.

Extension Agent and Unit Coordinator Report:  Doris Heath said there are possibilities of further budget cuts which could impact current employees and hiring of new employees. She also announced that there will be a new VCE Dean at Virginia Tech in the near future; he is coming here from Purdue.

June General Meeting Minutes:  A motion and second were made to approve the June minutes as posted on the website.  The minutes were approved. 

Treasurer Report:  Linda Wever reported the balances for our operating funds, the training funds and the separate funds for the Water Stewards and Tree Stewards.  She announced that we would collect and report sales tax starting January 1, 2010.  She explained that we were previously exempt from these taxes because we only sold things on a limited basis. A member asked what we are selling and specifically asked for information on birdhouse sales; she was told there would be a report at the next meeting. Linda also indicated that other sales this year included the plant sale, containers and posters.

September Meeting Speaker:  Carol Fryer announced the speaker for the September 3rd monthly meeting, at Williamsburg Regional Library, is Lawrence Griffith, plant curator for Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, who will talk about his book "Flowers and Herbs of Early America". Barbara Temple Lombardi, photographer for the book, will join Mr. Griffith for the presentation.

Risk Management Training: Carol also announced online Risk Management Training with Dave Close, Master Gardener Coordinator at VT on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. This training will be held at the VCE office on Forge Road in Toano. Doris Heath, our Unit Coordinator, will establish the Internet connection with Virginia Tech. All members must complete a VCE Volunteer form by Oct. 1 each year to be covered by the Master Gardener Liability Insurance. Risk management training needs to be completed every 3 years. 

Brent and Becky’s Bulbs Field Trip:  John Giffin announced the September 14^th Visit to Brent and Becky’s Bulbs as a tour of their farm gardens and a seminar on “Bulbs as Companion Plants,”  The cost is $15 and the checks should be payable to JCC/W MG and sent to John. Seminar attendance is limited to fifty people. Catalogs were provided to members so they can order and receive available items without paying extra for mailing, Autographed books by Brent and Becky will be available. An optional $12 lunch will be held at Olivia’s Restaurant near Gloucester Court House after the field trip.

Publicity Chairperson:  Linda Lucas introduced Toddy Voorhees who in the new Publicity Chair. Toddy will work closely with the project chairs to publicize their activities.

VP: Projects Report:  Linda Lucas gave Jeanne Millin’s report. Jeanne still needs some reports for spring projects.  Fall projects to include Pruning Clinics, Landscape Love and Environmental Education are planned and are seeking volunteers. Kari Abbott had a sign up form at the meeting. Project Chairs are needed for Mobile Master Gardener and Help Desk.

VMGA Representatives Report:  Nelda Pressly announced two Master Gardener events in this area on Saturday, September 12. The Virginia Green Industry Council (VGIC) has invited the public to their fourth Virginia GoGreen garden festival in Richmond from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garner Pavilion (located behind the Science Museum), 2500 West Broad Street, in Richmond Virginia. For directions, web site www.smv.org andevent details www.virginiagardening.com. Festival admission and parking is free. The Virginia Beach Community Garden Festival, “Spring Into Fall,” hosted by the Virginia Beach Master Gardeners is being held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center, 1444 Diamond Springs Road, Virginia Beach.

Mattey’s Garden:  Genrose Lashinger announced that Mattey’s Garden will celebrate its 10^th Anniversary with activities at the school on September 25^th and 26^th.  She also announced that Mattey’s Garden T-shirts will be available for sale in September

Butterfly Mobiles:  Linda Lucas announced that Angela Cingale has Butterfly Mobile available for a donation to the Freedom Park Botanical Garden.

Container Gardening Success Stories:  Jack Gross asked members to send him “success stories” concerning their container gardening experiences for future publication.  Jack also announced that the CW Greenhouse is saving planting containers for Master gardeners; Jack brought them today for free distribution.

Turf Love Report. Bob Winters provided a report on the number of residential and commercial visits over the last year. He indicated the residential acreage covers was 41 and the commercial acreage was 412.appropriate links to the Master Gardener website so Members could download forms, the Risk Management presentation and other pertinent information. He said that Virginia Tech has started a 5000 sq ft turf test of Zoysia grass at Tom Rogers’ home.

Super Turf Saturday.  Bob Winters announced that Super Turf Saturday is being held on Saturday, August 15^th, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at Lafayette High School on Longhill Road. To register, call Virginia Cooperative Extension (564-2179) by August 13^th and leave a message with your name, phone number, and the number in your party attending. Topics to be presented are Sustainable Turf – Start with the Soil; Turf Species – Selecting What Works for You and Making It Grow; Weeds Out of Place – “Weeds to You” – What to Do; Managing the Incidence and Severity of Turfgrass Disease; and Question/Answers – VA Tech Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences Panel of Experts.

Turf and Landscape Certification.  Bob Winters announced that he plans a half day workshop for October to prepare Turf Rangers to pass a Turf and Landscape Certification Test. In addition there will be a three day Virginia Tech Turf and Landscape Certification Course in Virginia Beach starting on December 14^th.

Williamsburg Botanical Garden:  Peggy Krapf announced that the Williamsburg Botanical Garden is hosting two workshops on Saturday, September 5^th at Freedom Park:"The Top Ten Butterfly Plants for Williamsburg Gardens” with Jean Barter, James City County Master Gardener, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. (Rain Date September 12th) and "Flying With Monarch Butterflies: Part 2 of 3: The Very Hungry Caterpillars” with Barb Dunbar, York County Master Gardener, Virginia Master Naturalist, and York County Junior Master Gardener Leader, the second part of a three-part Learn and Grow Series for Kids from 11:00 -12:00 Noon. She also requested that Master Gardeners place bulbs order through the Williamsburg Botanical Garden.

Death of a Member:  It was announced that Fay Anderson has passed away and a service will be held Bruton Parish this afternoon.

Hours Certificates:  Linda Lucas, Dave banks and Carol Fryer handed out pins for 250, 500, 1000 and 5000 volunteer hours as a Master Gardener

The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 a.m. 

Butterfly Gardens and Plants for Southeast Virginia. After a break, Denise Greene, a native plant expert and owner of Sassafras Farm, including her gardens and nursery in Hayes, Virginia presented a detailed program on what plants attract butterflies and are well suited to this part of Virginia.

Master Gardener General Meeting
June 4, 2009

Dave Banks called the meeting to order at 9:05 AM.  76 Master Gardeners were in attendance.

Announcements:

501( c ) 3 status:  Dave announced that the Internal Revenue Service has granted Federal tax exempt status to the JCCW Master Gardener unit.  Jack Gross was commended for the help he provided in preparing the application package. Typically, an application takes 4-6 months to be processed; our application took a matter of six weeks because everything was in order!

New Officers:  Linda Lucas was introduced as the incoming president.  She, Pat Janot (Secretary) and Linda Weber (Treasurer)  will assume their duties effective July 1. 

VP: Projects:  Jeanne Millin reminded project leads to include the EEO statement on  work shop announcements, etc.  Draft documents can be sent to the VCE office for printing.  Master Gardeners should keep the mission in mind as they conduct business.

VP: Administration:  John Giffin reminded members of an upcoming seminar on Organic Gardening and Pesticide Alternatives to be held in New Kent on June 18. 

Speakers’ Bureau Coordinator, Minouche Robinson, requested that members consider preparing presentations or offering themselves as speakers.  She demonstrated the use of a Power Point presentation.  Minouche suggested that prospective speakers could pair with an experienced speaker in the beginning to increase their comfort level with speaking.  She also mentioned the need to complete a speaker’s report (form on website) so she would know of the presentation and could track for reporting purposes, VCE information, etc.

Risk Management Training:  Jeremy Johnson, JCC4H coordinator conducted a Power Point training program on the topic of Risk Management.  Those present were asked to sign an attendance sheet so their completion of the annual requirement could be documented.  He outlined the requirements and distributed a Risk Management form that is to be completed annually, Risk Management Emergency Contacts and Telephone Numbers cards.

 Note:  Numbers of the JCC agent and VA Tech Management Official will be distributed via e-mail or telephone in accordance with Jeremy Johnson’s instructions.

Jeremy talked about the liability insurance (NOT to include medical) that is available if needed (coverage up to $2M per incident if the volunteer follows policies).  He also reminded members of the need to get a Certificate of Insurance from VT if the vendor requests it.  The Certificate takes 2-3 weeks to obtain so advance planning is needed.

Subsequent to the meeting, Jeremy provided the following clarifications:

1.) Once MGs sign the application form they are covered for liability - not for transportation or medical.  Details are outlined below:
 
1.2 Provide protection against liability imposed by law for damages resulting from any claim made against any department, agency, institution, board, commission, officer, agent, or employee thereof for acts or omissions of any nature while acting in an authorized governmental or proprietary capacity and in the course and scope of employment or authorization...(Emphasis added)
 
The financial basis for this program is a trust fund contributed to by all State agencies and has a $2,000,000 per occurrence limit. At this time, we do not have limitations or exclusions that, in any way, limit the implementation of the University's programs.
 
Please remember, our coverage extends to any agent of the University. At no time do we try to dictate the mission of individual University entities. Therefore, if the university supports an activity as part of its mission, then our coverage will be in place for our representative. Also remember, this coverage is for liability and not injury to the employees or volunteers. Any medical problem arising from the volunteer's work for Virginia Tech is the responsibility of the volunteer. Each volunteer should verify that they have health insurance and if injured while working for us as a volunteer would file the injury with their personal insurer.

 2.) The only time you may need a certificate of insurance is if a vendor or service provider requests one.  You may decide to charter a bus, or, rent a facility for a program.  The vendor may request a Certificate of Insurance in order to conduct business with you.  If they ask for a COI it takes about two weeks for us to get it from campus.  You do NOT need a COI to use your own vehicles - only if the vendor asks for one. 

It is also important to note that when doing business with vendors/service providers VCE administration in Blacksburg must review and sign any contract.  The policy is listed below.

1.4 Contracts and Agreements

All contracts and agreements must be signed by an authorized university representative. These documents must be submitted to Cooperative Extension, Associate Director for Administration, for review, signature and return. Field and District staff are not authorized to sign a contract or agreement.

Dave indicated he would add the appropriate links to the Master Gardener website so Members could download forms, the Risk Management presentation and other pertinent information.

Master Gardener General Meeting
April 2, 2009

Dave Banks called the meeting to order. Eighty plus Master Gardeners were in attendance.

Announcements:

Master Gardener College:

MG College will be held June 16-21 at Virginia Tech. An auction will be held. Members who have a suitable garden-related item to be donated for the auction need to contact Nelda Pressly.

Environmental Education:

Kari Abbot announced an April 27 Walk-Through at York River State Park in preparation for a trip for D.J. Montague students. A similar trip will be held for Matoaka students on May 18.

Turf Love:

Bob Winters announced a workshop to be held April 16 in the kitchen at the VCE office.

VP for Projects:

Jeanne Millin requested that project leads review and respond to her on updating/correcting the content of project descriptions and related information for the website.

Field Trips:

Ruth Schultz announced a May 11 trip to the Virginia Zoo.

Jim Word announced a field trip to Forest Lane Botanicals (meet at 8:30 AM at Wal-Mart)

Plant Sale: Susan Giandomenico and Debbie Secrist updated members on the plant sale and announced a staging area for April 24.

Settlers’ Mill daffodil planting: Pat Rathke encouraged members to notice the daffodils planted by children in the development under her direction.

New Projects:

Regional Detention Center:

Minouche Robinson and Helen Kidder conducted a presentation on the Regional Detention Center effort they have been leading as a VCE special project for several years.

The Membership voted to approve this effort as an ongoing project. (Jeanne, any updated info. on project number, etc.?)

By-Laws changes:

1) 501(C) 3 status:

Jack Gross summarized the process undertaken by the James City County-Williamsburg Master Gardeners to obtain subject status from the Internal Revenue Service. He enumerated benefits of this status to the members and responded to Member questions.

The Membership voted to approve the changes in wording of the by-laws that would allow this effort to proceed. He anticipates it will take 4-6 months to complete the process.

2) Special Funding Circumstances: Sally Sissel proposed a change to this article as follows: Any single expenditure over $500 shall be voted upon by the membership.

After discussion, the membership voted to accept this change.

Summary: The Membership voted to approve the by-laws as presented.

A slate of potential officers for the period July 2009-June 2011 was announced as follows:

Treasurer’s Report:

Sarah Dougherty provided a re-cap of the Treasurer’s monthly report and announced that 36 members had not paid their dues. A final attempt to contact them will be made; those who have not paid dues by May 1 will be dropped from the roles.

James City/Williamsburg Master Gardeners General Meeting
March 5, 2009 

Dave Banks opened the meeting at 9 AM.  About 65 Master Gardeners attended.

Announcements: 

Master Gardener College will be held June 16-21 at Virginia Tech.  Master Gardeners are encouraged to consider attending this event. 

Website – Dave encouraged everyone to review and use the JCCWMG website.  He noted the website’s link to Google search bar allowing one to search the site easily.

Arbor Day -Beverly Baker promoted Arbor Day, to be held on March 13 at the New Town Legacy building.  All are welcome.

Kathy Van Mullekom – it was announced that Kathy has information in the Daily Press about a rain barrel workshop.  Check the Daily Press website for more information.

VP/Programs:

Jeanne Millen reported on the recent meeting for project chairs.  All chairs were urged to recruit a co-chair and to designate someone on the project to manage publicity.

Project chairs are urged to submit key results in bullet form to Jeanne and/or to submit this information to Doris for her periodic reports.

Jeanne is updating the intern project list and the project descriptions for the website.  As a way to encourage Members to work on different projects, a different project will be featured at the general meeting and in the newsletter each month.

Programs/Events:

Landscape Love – Anne Nielson reported that she had received 15 requests for assistance for the spring session.  Anne requested volunteers for the upper county developments.  She also announced a spring trip to Chadd’s Ford, organized by the Governor’s Land Garden Club. 

Plant Sale – Susan Giandomenico updated the group on plans for the Plant Sale.  She distributed hard copies of the Plant Sale flier and offered additional hard and soft copies to those who would post them in the community.   If you do post these fliers, please let Susan know where they have been posted.

VP/Internal Education:

Amplification system:  Carol Fryer presented a proposal to purchase an amplification system for speakers to use in outdoor presentations such as but not limited to pruning workshops.  She responded to member questions.  If approved, this system could be used by any project on a first come, first served system.

The membership voted to approve the purchase of the amplification system which costs approximately $199.

By-laws changes:

Dave gave an overview of proposed changes to the Master Gardener by-laws.  The primary proposal was to petition the Internal Revenue Service for 501(c) 3 status (and upon approval from the Department of the Treasury request tax exempt status from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Taxation.).  There were a number of administrative changes/updates presented to the membership as well. 

Jack Gross presented the portion of the by-law changes relative to 501(c) 3.  He gave an overview of the rationale for the change, the benefits to the members if the change were to be enacted, the costs, the timeframes and the actions required.  Jack responded to Member questions.  Jack indicated he would spearhead the effort and would work with the Board members over the next few months to obtain this status.

The Membership voted to approve the cost of $750 to seek 501(c) 3 status.

Dave walked through the remaining proposed by-law changes.  The most substantial changes include the following:

• changes of final due date for payment of annual dues and submission of volunteer and training hours to January 31 of the calendar year.
• updated definitions of inactive and emeritus Master Gardener status
• authority for the board to spend funds NTE $1500 per budget year without prior membership approval for items that further the goals of the organization and
• minor updates in wording throughout the document. 

Members will vote on by-laws changes at the April General Meeting.

VP/Administration:

Dave thanked Cathy Lohwater for accepting the position of Newsletter Editor.

Membership:  Susan Giandomenico indicated she was still contacting those who had not paid their dues and was working to produce an updated roster. She and Sarah Dougherty work together to update member status and to remind people that dues are due.

Secretary:  no report

Treasurer:: Sarah Dougherty gave the monthly report and responded to Member questions.  She indicated that 49 Master Gardeners have not paid their dues.

Demonstration:
Susan Giandomenico demonstrated a Picasa photo website she set up to house photos of Master Gardener events.  Members were very impressed and enthusiastic about this site.  Send pictures to Susan and she will upload them or she will teach Members how to upload the pictures.    Visit this website to view photos.  http://picasaweb.google.com/jccwmg1

James City/Williamsburg Master Gardeners General Meeting
January 8, 2009

Dave Banks convened the meeting at 9 AM. Eighty plus Master Gardeners were present.

Announcements:

- Dues are due. Pay Sarah Dougherty, Treasurer.

- $ for Annual dinner is due today. Cost is $15. A non-lasagne entrée will be featured. Dinner will be held on January 15th at the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist Church.

- Therapeutic gardening project members’ meeting will be held after the General Meeting.

- Incredible Edibles will meet on 1/8 in the afternoon at the Gustafson home.

- We are looking for nominees for the nominating committee who will search for members to fill Board positions of President, VP- Programs, SECRETARY and Treasurer.

- The following positions are vacant: Newsletter editor, Waterwise gardening, Logo clothing, publicity, State recorder and Enviroscape project lead.

- Roster: Susan Giandomenico updated the group on her update of the roster and asked all to return the e-mails she has been sending out over the past month. She will distribute an updated roster within the next few days and frequently after that.

- Class of 2009 met on Monday, January 5 for the first time. Dave advised that the class schedule was on the website. Members should contact Rich Bunger to audit a class.

- Turf Love – Bob Winters announced Turf Love U, scheduled for February 28th. He shared the results of programs to improve the health of the golf courses at Ford’s Colony over the past three years and stressed that Turf Love is also a water quality initiative.

Doris Heath – Doris had no formal comments but did respond to questions about the form and process we should use to count contacts. She, Dave Banks and Art Gustafson will follow up to determine how best to gather the contact numbers, possibly integrate contact reporting into the monthly reporting form , etc.

Reports:

Appointment of Jeanne Millin as VP-Projects – Dave explained the process for filling a Board Member term and advised that Jeanne Millin had volunteered for the job of VP - Projects. Ms Millin was not present.

Treasurer’s Report: Sarah Dougherty gave the Treasurer’s report for January and responded to questions.

VMGA: Nelda Pressly announced the 2009 dates of Master Gardener College (June 18-21, 2009).

Presentations: Fran Geisler of the Stormwater Management Program presented an update on water testing. She appealed for help in monitoring the health of streams in JCC. Master Gardeners were urged to contact Fran or her assistant if interested in upcoming training (2/7 or 3/21) or to be included on the mailing list for future program components as they roll out.

Susan Giandomenico appealed to the membership to write to their County Supervisor and to others influential in County government, stressing the worth of the Master Gardener Program and urging them to work expeditiously to fill the Extension Agent position.

The business meeting concluded at 10:05 AM. Following a break, Wesley Greene, Plant Historian at Colonial Williamsburg conducted a presentation on the History and Development of the Gardens at the Governor’s Palace.

Dave Banks convened the meeting at 9:00 AM.  About 60 Master Gardeners were in attendance.

Announcements:

The January 09 General meeting will be held on January 8, due to the January 1 Holiday.

The 09 Graduation Dinner will be held on January 15.   Class speakers and certain JCC officials will be invited as the guests of the Master Gardeners.

           New Projects and MGs with the highest number of hours in various categories             will be recognized.

           The menu will feature a new entrée.  Price of the dinner will be $15. 

           A sign up sheet will be circulated requesting members to provide appetizers

Dues ($15 per year) are due.  Monies for the dinner and dues can be paid to Sarah Dougherty, Treasurer.

 Jeanne Millin announced that 8 books are missing from the MG library at the VCE ofc.  Book titles are listed on the website. 

Scheduling of Meetings in County-operated facilities:  Dave reminded all of a new procedure to be followed in scheduling meetings in County-run facilities.  Additional paperwork needs to be completed.

 Class of 09 will begin on Monday, January 5.  Sessions will be held at the Health and Human Services Building.  If you wish to audit a class, contact Rich Bunger.

 Help Wanted:  The positions of VP-Projects, newsletter, waterwise garden, enviroscape State Recorder and publicity need to be filled.  Contact Dave if you are interested.  (NOTE:  subsequent to the meeting, Jeanne Millin volunteered to serve as VP-Projects.

 Honors: 

 - Rich Strenkowski and others who worked on the Water Workshop in May 08 were honored by the County.  A plaque was presented to Rich.

- The environmental education program was selected from a national field of testers to be a field tester for the new Project Wild Preschool curriculum.  The kindergarten and bright beginnings classes at DJ Montague Elementary School will be the test classrooms.  E2 has been working with WJCC Bright Beginnings program (a program for children at risk, economically and socially).   The test modules will be conducted for three months, one in January, one in February and one in March.  JCC Master Gardeners will be listed in the new curriculum once it is finalized as contributing field editors.

New Projects:  Jeannie Gilman, Sue Voigt, Ralph Ashton and Nancy Harris presented a slide show about the New Kent Gardens.  MG members voted to accept this as a new project.  All were advised the project was open to participation by all Master Gardeners, regardless of where they lived.

Budget:

Sarah Dougherty presented the 09 Budget.  She responded to questions.  The budget was approved as presented.

After a short break, the education committee introduced Bob Goodhart, retired director of landscaping at CNU.  He delivered a program and slide show about camellias.

November 6, 2008

Update: Doris Heath

Paperwork for a part time agent is ready to be submitted, there will be no full time agent in 2009. There has been an issue between JCC and VT regarding paperwork for an agent; hopefully, it is resolved.

Budget impacts continue. There is no out-of-state travel. Members were urged to contact legislators regarding the need for an agent and the adverse impacts of going without one.

- Nelda and Jim Pressly and Jerry Babski will conduct a propagation workshop on November 13. Plants need to be started earlier in order to be presentable for the plant sale.

Turf Love: Bob Winters will conduct lawn ranger training on November 19th. He reminded members of the fescue growing trials sponsored by JCC and VT.

Internal Education: Carol Fryer – Our calendar is now on the website. The pruning team will offer pruning sessions in neighborhoods.

Helpline: Helen Hamilton: The electronic helpdesk has been very successful. John Giffin and Jim Kavitz will handle helpdesk questions that arise during the winter.
Botanical Garden – two gardens have been established; one at the Jamestown settlement and the other at Freedom park. Freedom Park still has no water supply. Native Plants seem to be doing well. Helen will have a native plant book for sale once the Native Plant Society prices it.

Budget: Sarah Dougherty – the 09 budget will be presented at the December meeting.

Incredible Edibles provided a project update. Topics included the project history, use of container gardens, coordination with the WIC program, use of less expensive containers, and emphasis on teaching Hispanic parents. Jack Gross and Dennis Woll did a lot with self-watering containers. Harriet Parsons provided a project impact report.

The project team also discussed their Farmers’ Market display, their desire to sell posters and providing a veggie basket with recipes at the summer markets. All were successful.

The business meeting concluded at 10 AM. After a short break, the November speaker, Hunter Curry of Colonial Williamsburg’s landscaping department did a presentation about making Christmas decorations using natural materials.

October 2, 2008 

Dave Banks convened the meeting.  About 50 Master Gardeners were in attendance.

Doris Heath was introduced.  She provided brief remarks:

The State is under a mandated 5-15% cut in expenditures.  Local budgets are being cut also.  Even though some Federal monies fund the Master Gardener program, we are subject to both State and local expenditure limits. 

All positions must be approved by James City County.  JCC is trying for a full time agent.  New Kent has hired a part time agent.  Paperwork to recruit behind Leanne Dubois’ position is ready to be submitted.  Doris believes the position will be filled on a part time basis in 09 and will ask for full time in 2010.  She does not anticipate the position will be filled until next summer.

Announcements:

Carol Fryer announced more field trips for the coming year, including a ½ day advanced workshop.  An activity calendar will be put on the webpage.

Dave announced filling of project vacancies as follows:  Anne Nielsen – Landscape Love, Minouche Robinson – Speakers’ Bureau.  We continue to recruit for publicity. 

Speakers’ Bureau – Dave announced a Speakers’ Bureau report form on the website.  Those who make presentations to outside groups should complete a report electronically.  It will be directed to Minouche.

Budget – Project leads should submit their 09 needs to Sarah.

Kari Abbott – Kari reported on the conference she attended and received an award.  Sixteen States competed.  Fourteen States asked for copies of Kari’s project.

Minouche is heading up a special projects group.  Under that umbrella, Warhill High School has asked for help with their student garden.  Volunteers are needed once a week, fall and Spring.

The next VMGA meeting will be held in Newport News on October 11.

Hour Awards:  Dave handed out hour awards for 250, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 hours of service

Angela Cingale displayed a Sustainable Landscape Management Award Denis Mehigan received.

Treasurer’s Report:  Dave read the Treasurer’s Report for September 2008.  No questions were asked.

James City/Williamsburg Master Gardeners General Meeting
September 4, 2008

Dave Banks opened the meeting at 9 AM. Approximately 60 Master Gardeners were present.

Recruiting an Extension Agent: Dave reviewed the procedure that would be followed in the recruiting of an Extension Agent. He discussed the weekly report that Doris Heath had requested on key activities that involve youth, Senior groups or the under-served. He also suggested that letters to Doris could be helpful. The value of an hour of volunteer time has been calculated at $20.50 per hour or over $350,000 per year.

Dave read a note from Leanne DuBois, thanking the group for the reception held in her honor.

Announcements:

Membership: Susan Giandomenico was introduced as the new membership chair. Susan requested that members send her their updated e-mail addresses, if applicable and also their cell phone numbers.

Plant Sale: The 2009 plant sale will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Williamsburg Community Building. Susan Giandomenico and Deb Secrist will serve as co-chairs. Susan & Deb thanked past chairmen for their cooperation and encouragement. A plant propagation workshop will be held in November 08. A “personal shopper” component may be introduced.

Youth Activities: Kari Abbott indicated that work at DJ Montague would begin on September 9.

Trips: The September 12 trip to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science was announced.

Tree Stewards’ Class: Sue Liddell announced the formation of a training class for Tree Stewards in the Peninsula. Class will begin this winter and will be held in Hampton.

Williamsburg Botanical Garden:
Helen Hamilton announced upcoming walks to be held at the Garden. One topic will be drought tolerant plants.

Help Wanted!

Dave announced that key project chair vacancies existed for the Landscape Love project, Speakers’ Bureau and Publicity positions. (NOTE: subsequently, Anne Nielson volunteered to serve as Landscape Love chair.)

August 7, 2008

Dave Banks opened the meeting at 9:00 AM. About 75 Master Gardeners attended.

Leanne DuBois' Departure:

Dave re-capped Leanne's August 1 reception and thanked those who worked to make it a success.

He then explained the salary arrangement for her position: JCC would pay 1/6 of the agent's salary. He said that Barbara Board's strategy would be to recruit a full time agent. In the meantime, we may hare a part-time assistant to work about 2 days/week, attend VCE meetings and manage the phone calls and other administrative tasks. It was mentioned that New Kent County also plans to hire a part time agent.

Barb Foley will keep the Turf Love program going at the VCE office.

A justification to fill Leanne's position is needed and is being prepared by Charlie Clapper. Doris Heath is expected to attend future MG general and board meetings. Dave stressed that we may need to lobby the supervisors to bring the need for an agent to their attention. He noted that VCE retirements and separations exceed hires.

Birdhouses: Dave announced that inflation had struck the birdhouses and they will now be sold for $30.

Helpdesk Library:

Jeannie Millen reported the library had been renovated. An index of books will be placed on the website and a sign-out procedure will be inaugurated. Leanne purchased several books with her own funds prior to her departure. Jeannie mentioned the Ortho reference book might need to be replaced.

Turf Love – Bob announced plans for the August 16th Turf Love program and solicited volunteers.

Landscape Love – it was mentioned that the website may need to be updated so fall visits could be scheduled. Dave will check on this.

July 3, 2008

The Master Gardeners held their monthly ‘meeting’ at the Freedom Park.
About 25 Master Gardeners attended. In lieu of a formal meeting, Carolyn Will, Donna Ware and Sue Liddell led wildflower walks.

Following the walks, participants ate their brown bag lunches and enjoyed watermelon.

MGs who took the lead in the event were: John Giffin lead/speaker arrangements; Angela Cingale and Jean Winters, refreshments; Carol Fryer admin.; Bob Winters, carpooling and Dan Tevlin, tent and table set up.

June 5, 2008

Dave Banks welcomed over 90 Master Gardeners and guests. A special welcome was extended to the eleven Emeritus Master Gardeners who attended the meeting.

Jean Winters:

Announced the picnic/wildflower walk scheduled for July 3 and a VIMS trip scheduled for September 12.

She extended thanks to those who had assisted with recent MG trips, as well as to the Emeriti members and the Interns who were present.

Tee-shirts:

Susan Giandomenico provided specifics and indicated that tee shirts would be available to see/try on during the break. She provided order forms.

Plant Sale: Specifics will be in a future newsletter.

Water Workshop – Rich indicated he may be trying to expand the workshop to presentations for various Homeowner Associations.

Kari Abbott award – Kari was congratulated for the 4H Environmental award she received. The membership approved the $395 registration fee for the upcoming conference where the award would be presented.

Election of Officers:

Membership elected the following officers for a two year term: Carol Fryer (Vice President/Internal Education; John Giffin, Vice President/Administration and Jim & Nelda Pressly, VMGA representatives. Newly elected officers were invited to the June 12 Board Meeting.

Kudos:

Dave extended Kudos and a job well done to those board members who are departing (Barbara Gustafson, Lynn Flood and Anne Odle) and a welcome to incoming members, Carol Fryer, John Giffin and Jim/Nelda Pressly. He also congratulated Susan Giandomenico who was awarded the local scholarship to Master Gardener College.

Agent’s Report: Leanne promoted the June 29th Farm Tour.

Charlie Clapper opened the meeting at the Scotland Street library. at 9 AM. Approximately 50 Master Gardeners attended.

Announcements:

Water Workshop - Barbara Gustafson reminded the group of the May 10 workshop and asked for volunteers to bring/bake refreshments. MGs were invited to a dry run for speakers, scheduled on May 1.
Storm Water Division – Rich Strenkowski announced proposed legislation and urged members to e-mail the Chesapeake CBF.org to indicate support. Volunteer opportunities are available to monitor stream health (4 hours/every 3 months). He also announced the availability of matching grants from homeowner associations.

Plant Sale – Becky Sutton thanked members for their support and indicated financial results were being tallied.

Demonstration: Jim Kavitz conducted a demonstration of the automated helpline and responded to member questions.

Plant pathology clinics will take place at the Extension ofc., beginning May 5 for the next six weeks. Susan Giandomenico will lead the MG effort.

A consulting effort will be formed for misc. efforts. Minouche Robinson will head up. The Williamsburg Winery and various schools have requested assistance in developing gardens.

Merrimac Detention Center graduation took place in late April. It was well attended.

A beekeeping program is going to be started soon.

A Farm Resource Guide is being developed with the help of William and Mary students.

Dave Banks convened the meeting at 9:05 AM on March 6. Approximately 65 Master Gardeners (MGs) were in attendance.

Dave’s Announcements

• Upcoming Colonial Williamsburg (CW) Garden Symposium - MGs scheduled to talk on 5/4. Reid and Mattey’s Gardens will be featured.
• $50 gift given to Virginia Turf Grass Council from MG 08 budget (one of the suggestions about uses of reserve monies).
• Dates for MG college- June 17-22. More details forthcoming.
• Purchase of a second projector being investigated, up to $2K from training excess not reserves. Use rate on existing projector is excessive.
• Nomination and awards committees being staffed. Please consider helping if asked.
• Thank you from Virginia Tech. for Virginia Master Gardener Association (VMGA) donation and from Jean Barter for plant.

Member Announcements:

Plant Sale – Becky Sutton

A Hypertufa Workshop will be held at Becky’s home on March 9. A clean-up of Carol Conner’s greenhouse will be held on March 10 at Carol’s home. Plants to be started from seeds can be brought to Carol’s greenhouse for TLC. Jerry Babski will mentor anyone wanting to start seeds. Those wanting digs to be held in their yard should contact Becky.

The April Program will be held at Quarterpath Recreation Center, rather than at the Library. Directions will be forthcoming.

Turf Love – Bob Winters

Kudos go to those who helped with the March 1 workshop. Upcoming training session will feature organic products.

On March 8 and 9, the Master Gardeners will assist the Community Conservation Partnership (CCP) program. Tree seedlings will be available to participants and helpers.

Habitat for Humanity – Cathy Lohwater

The Habitat for Humanity will be landscaping its 100^th home this spring. MGs were asked to donate maintenance items (old lawnmower, hoses, etc.) for homeowner use.

Busch Gardens Field Trip – Ruth Schultz

Both May trips are full. A third date was added on May 15. That trip also has been filled with those on the wait list.

Incredible Edibles – Ailene Bartlett

A workshop to build a self-watering container will be held on March 28 at the James City County Community Center (JCC/CC ) from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. Additional details and materials list will be forthcoming.

Farmers’ Market – Helen Kidder

Helen reminded attendees of Farmers’ Market that will be held on March 9.

Williamsburg Botanical Garden – Helen Hamilton

Helen mentioned that a garden manager has been hired. Williamsburg Botanical Garden (WBG) will participate in the homes how to be held at the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex (WISC) on the week-end of March 8. This project needs youth tour leaders.

Logo Clothing – Judy Hansen

Lanyards are still available and are free. Judy showed a picture of proposed clothing additions and asked those present for feedback.

List of upcoming Events

Dave reported that Angela Cingale was working on compiling this list. The water workshop will be held on May 10, not on March 10 as indicated in the newsletter.

Help Desk

Dave reported that last fall, several interns approached Helen Hamilton about automating the helpdesk and worked to make it happen. Much of the documentation formerly stored in binders is now linked to Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) that lead to the research or answer. MGs are urged to test the helpdesk when is goes live on the website in early March and report any glitches. This service will be for MG use and testing in 08 and will go live within the community in 09. Those who worked on the effort were recognized.

GOOD NEWS

• Arbor Day award next week – Toni Webb reported the MGs would receive an award of Excellence on March 14. Our group has received numerous citations in the past. Pat Rathke will received an individual award given to an individual living in the area who has effected a positive change in and enhancement of the quality of the area’s environment. 
• Kari Abbott was featured in the Daily Press of March 1, discussing her role with MGs.
• Turf Love received a $500 Pride Grant for a Nutrient Management Plan for Stonehouse Golf Course.
• Mattey's Garden received a $1500 grant from the Williamsburg Garden Club and they will be featured on the Historic Garden Week Tour in April.

Action Items:

• Bylaws changes for election of board members and approval of the establishment of the Vice President (VP) Administration position and the combining of duties of the VP for Youth Programs with those of the VP for Programs.
• Donation of $500 for WBG to be taken from reserves.

• Kudos to Minouche Robinson and Helen Kidder for their work at the Merrimac Detention Center
• A certificate of appreciation has been given to Jeannie Gilman for her work with the New Kent Master Gardeners and for spearheading the development of an organic garden in New Kent.

Dues:  Due!  Deadline for receipt of dues is normally February 1.  Get dues in ASAP during meeting or send to Sarah Dougherty 

2008 Re-certification Letter:  Was mailed out in late December.  A second small mail out will take place very soon.  Let VCE know if you didn’t receive your letter.  Validate your contact information, advise about the projects you may be interested in working on and mail letter to Sarah Dougherty, Treasurer.

2007 Hours Letter – will be mailed to all MGs during February.  Letter will summarize the hours you reported in 07.  If the letter you receive indicates no hours, that means you have submitted no hours to Art Gustafson.  Include your name on any monthly hours tally sheet you submit to Art.

Graduation Dinner – January 10 Dinner was a success.  Over 80 attended!

Projects: 

            Help Needed:  Announcements were made on behalf of the following projects:

            Williamsburg Botanical Garden Youth Tour Leaders – contact Helen Hamilton 

            Mobile Master Gardener Project – Denny Mehigan presented a brief power point show about this project.  He included the spring schedule and requested help in staffing the exhibit at various venues.  Contact Denny Mehigan

Therapeutic Gardening – Barbara Gustafson announced a project to be co- chaired by Nancy Greene and herself and held at the Williamsburg Landing.  The effort will involve residents in the assisted living facility, helped by those in the independent living facility, and will be held on the second and fourth Monday of upcoming months. 

J4C – Barbara Gustafson explained the Master Gardeners’ involvement in the J4C project and answered meeting attendee questions.

Other announcements:

Audit of MG classes:  – Rich Bunger:  Rich announced that effective immediately, Mary Liz Sadler would be the contact for MGs who wish to audit an MG training session.

Photos taken of home water re-cycling devices: -  Nelda Pressly – requested copies of photos which will be used during the May workshop.

Trip to Busch Garden Greenhouses: - Ruth Schultz announced two trips to the Busch Garden Greenhouses in May.  Contact Ruth to sign up.

Plant Sale: Becky Sutton – Becky announced the plant propagation workshop to be held on February 9 at her home and passed around sign-up sheets for volunteer activities in conjunction with the sale.  She has plastic knives which will be used as plant identifiers.  Plant sale will be held on April 26.

Youth Environmental Education: Kari Abbott - Kari announced a grant for an outdoor classroom at DJ Montague school, a training program for the school’s faculty and an upcoming field trip to be held in May 08.

Turf Love U:  Bob Winters – Bob announced the March 1 Turf Love U and the March 13 Lawn Ranger training session.  Sign-up sheets were passed around.

Pruning sessions: Carol Fryer.  Carol announced three upcoming pruning workshops in James City and New Kent Counties during February and March, as well as field trips.

Minutes:  Pat Crowe indicated minutes of the January general meeting were on the website.  Minutes were approved.

By-Laws Changes: 

Dave introduced proposed changes to the JCCW MG by-laws to establish a position of VP-Administration, to combine the duties of VP-Youth and VP-Projects and to establish two standing committees for awards and nominations.  A copy of the proposed by-law changes was distributed to all in attendance.  Voting will take place at the March general meeting.

Reserves:  Charlie Clapper

   Charlie explained the function of the reserves committee and identified the members:  (Sarah Dougherty, Judy Hansen, Sally Sissel and Barbara Gustafson).  He described the process followed and presented the Board’s recommendations which were to fund two mini-grants in Williamsburg neighborhoods and to contribute to funding a drip irrigation system at Mattey’s Garden.

Genrose Lashinger responded to member questions about the Mattey’s Garden  project.

The membership voted their approval of both recommendations.    Two mini-grants of $250 each will be awarded.   Master Gardeners will contribute $2,000 toward the purchase and installation of the irrigation system at Matteys.  Genrose Lashinger will be responsible to raise the rest of the money needed.  

The business meeting concluded at 9:45 AM.  Following a break, the speaker, Charles Stayton a Williamsburg firefighter/paramedic and interpreter at Jamestown, spoke on the topic “Robert Beverley looks Back 1607 – 1707”.

- Dave read a thank-you note from the library director for the donation given by the Master Gardeners for the use of the library as their meeting space during 2007.
- Please claim the ‘snowman’ plate’ brought to the December 8 VMGA meeting and left behind.

- Hours awards: given to Becky Sutton and Alice Kopinicz.
- Pest Management Book will be shipped from VT on 1/11. Contact Leanne if you want your own copy.
- MG student text is being revised and will be available in Fall 08.
- VMGA and Fine Gardening Magazine have entered into a commercial partnership. For every new subscription purchased from the VMGA website, the magazine will donate $10 to VMGA.
- CNU’s spring symposium will be held on April 19 th. Additional information is available on the CNU website.
- Re-certification letter will be mailed to members in mid-January.
- Turf Love initiative is being considered for statewide implementation.
- Reserves task force – Dave requested volunteer assistance for Charlie.
Habitat for Humanity: Dave invited Judy Hansen to speak for the Habitat for Humanity Project. She told the group two HH homes are being built in Williamsburg . The Master Gardeners will provide expertise and planting assistance, will provide homeowners with a booklet that describes plant care and watering procedures. Two follow-up visits to homeowners will be conducted. She responded to Master Gardener questions. The membership voted to approve the project.

Rich Strenkowski announced the Water workshop, scheduled for May 10 and circulated a sign up sheet for administrative help and Master Gardener presentations.
Judy Hansen:
- Announced the availability of First Aid kits for project leads.

Many thanks to all volunteers who helped make the Dec. VMGA meeting at First Colony successful.
At the meeting, there was much discussion about the state of the economy and how the state MG Coordinator position and mgs are affected in both the past and future.

To help with the Endowment Fund which helps to secure our state MG Coordinator position, Fine Gardening will donate $10 for every new subscription order from a gardener in Virginia who signs up on the VMGA.net web site between now and May 31, 2008. This $10 donation only applies to new orders – not renewals.

The VMGA is very grateful for our unit's upcoming $500 contribution to the Endowment Fund approved in our '08 budget.

Also there was much discussion about what units are charging for the training class.  Majority seem to charge below $100, no refund after intern hours completed with retention of 2-3 yrs.  So we seem to be right in line in ‘08.

February 9th VMGA meeting is in Henrico.  Details will follow.

Other announcements:
- Bob Winters referenced follow-up that the Turf Love team conducts in terms of surveys sent out to homeowners visited. Super turf Saturday will be held in early March. An invitation will be mailed out to the homeowners visited last year.
- Nancy Greene invited MGs interested in attending the Philadelphia flower show to contact her so that carpools could be arranged.
- Jean Winters requested assistance in making flower arrangements for the MG dinner.
- Marilyn Riddle announced the Flora Virginia project that will be held at the library on 1/22.

The business meeting was adjourned at 9:30 AM to prepare for our speaker Bill Garlette, NNMG, to speak on “the Good, the Bad and the Bugly”.
