Compost - Local Sources

There are at least two sources of bulk compost locally.  Also, the local hardware stores and feed and seed stores carry bagged compost.

When purchasing compost it is very important to know the pH level and mineral content.  The desired pH for most plants in this area is around 6.2 to 6.5.

Bulk Source One: VPPSA (Virginia Peninsula Public Service Authority) compost facility is located is located in York County at:
145 Goodwin Neck Road, Yorktown, Virginia 23692
Phone 757-898-5012  Fax 757-898-0641

The compost there is made from grass and ground limbs and leaves collected from residences of counties around the peninsula.

Bulk Source Two:  Peninsula Hardwood Mulch is located in Toano at 7800 Richmond Road.  They have two types of compost.  One is made entirely from leaves and the other is made with sludge from a sewage treatment plant in Maryland.

A soil test was conducted on all three types of compost.  Keep in mind that this is just one sample and the composition may change from batch to batch.
